CATEGORY Student Services

The Voyageur Outward Bound School (VOBS) is a non-profit, adventure-based, education organization that emphasizes personal growth through challenge and discovery. For over 50 years, VOBS courses have focused on inspiring self-reliance, confidence, teamwork, and compassion.

The Course Advisor provides an essential role within the Student Services Department to assist customers with course selection, convert inquiries to enrollments, and prepare all incoming students for their Outward Bound experience. This person also provides information to Course Directors for students arriving on upcoming courses. This position is responsible for tracking enrolled students, managing receipt of their application materials, and reviewing medical forms and questionnaires submitted by the applicant to assess medical, psychological, behavioral, and motivational appropriateness for courses located in Minnesota and Texas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Sales and Customer Service

  • Provide friendly, relevant, responsive, knowledgeable, and confident customer service to prospective and enrolled students and their families.
  • Effectively manage time and tasks across systems, apps, and platforms for efficient and timely customer service; key systems, apps, and platforms include Salesforce, course web pages, Safety and Information databases, as well as Calendly, the Gmail suite, and the MS suite.
  • Effectively utilize communication tools for timely and efficient student enrollment; key communication tools include calls, meetings, emails, and web pages.
  • Be knowledgeable and accurate about available courses and the associated requirements. Assist families with course selection.
  • Proactively direct customers to courses in need in order to meet departmental goals and objectives.
  • Execute accurate data entry in accordance with VOBS enrollment procedures.
  • Help students understand mental and physical readiness to successfully complete an Outward Bound course.
  • Process payments, transfers, cancellations, and refunds in a timely manner while maintaining accurate information in the VOBS database.
  • Efficiently navigate Salesforce and understand how Salesforce interacts with additional applications including: Authorize, Calendly, Gmail, and more.
  • Participate in VOBS’ Emergency Response Plan as assigned, and act as a parent liaison during critical field incidents.
  • Consistently look for ways to deepen the VOBS relationship with each student and family.

Application Review and Screening

  • Conduct initial assessment of student medical, psychological, behavioral, and motivational readiness for Outward Bound programming using VOBS assessment guidelines and screening tools.
  • Conduct follow-up with students, parents, doctors, and/or therapists to gather additional information as needed to further assess each applicant’s readiness for Outward Bound programming.
  • Consult with Student Services Manager and Outward Bound’s consulting physicians as needed.
  • Review and approve or decline enrollment applications in a timely fashion with a high standard of professionalism and sensitivity.
  • Track student ages and identities for crew diversity to enhance group learning conditions.

Course Packaging

  • Assemble and summarize accurate and complete information on each student for Course Directors and Instructors prior to course planning.
  • Brief Course Directors and/or instructors during course planning.




  • Habit of active listening and practice in responsive communication.

  • Comfort and confidence with in-person and written communication.
  • Comfort, confidence, and curiosity when working with technology.
  • Ability to communicate Outward Bound mission, vision, values, educational approach, basecamp locations, course areas, and activities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify goals and structure tasks and responsibilities to meet external and internal stakeholder needs and deadlines.
  • Ability to think creatively in response to student or stakeholder needs, and solve problems in the moment.
  • Experience working with a team desired.
  • MS Word, Excel, Salesforce, and Google experience preferred.
  • Self-starter, strong initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must work well in a team environment and excel under pressure.

Education and Work Experience

  • Outward Bound or other wilderness expeditionary experience beneficial.
  • Background in a medical and/or mental health-related field beneficial.
