When youth workers feel isolated or alone in youth work, it’s harmful to them, their organization, and the young people they serve. Youth workers need opportunities to build human connections and feel included in their organizations for them to grow personally and professionally.

As a youth worker, you may find benefit in forming or engaging in an affinity group within your organization. The benefits of being connected around a common identity can help you feel empowered as you work to improve your organization, and ultimately to achieve positive youth outcomes.

Learn about what affinity groups are and how you can start and maintain one. Lavasha Smith is a mother, daughter, and friend. She is the oldest of seven children and youth work has always been a passion of hers. She currently works as a Program Specialist at Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities and has been with the agency for two and a half years. In her previous role, Lavasha worked as a match coordinator matching youth with volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters. She also serves as the acting president of their employee resources group, People of Color and Indigenous Resource Collaborative (POICRC). She is currently working on her master’s degree in Organizational Leadership at St. Mary’s University and obtained her undergraduate degree from Augsburg University, formerly known as Augsburg College, with a focus on Psychology & Youth and Family Ministry. From caring for her siblings to working in childcare as a teenager, Lavasha believes that youth are the future and it is up to us as adults to plant seeds and watch them grow.
